The best medical engineering job in the country isn’t all about the science, says medical technology analyst and co-founder of Medical Technologies Australia Jason Stoddart.

Instead, it’s about the skills you need to be a world-class medical engineer.

Why a new bioengineering job at a biomedical engineering school is good for your health

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the potential benefits of a new biomedical engineering job at an American university is the sheer number of jobs it could lead to.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 20,000 biomedical engineering and engineering-related jobs are being created each year, with an average of more than 8,000 per year.

Despite the lack of diversity in the biomedical engineering workforce, the health profession is continuing to grow in its numbers.

In a study published in March of this year, the Health Affairs, a national professional organization representing more than 6,000 health care professionals, reported that the total number of new members of the profession increased from 4,839 in 2010 to 6,091 in 2020. 

As a result, according to a study conducted by The American Association of University Women, more women are pursuing a biomedical career in the United States, but the majority of new candidates are men. 

When it comes to hiring more women in biomedical careers, the University of Maryland’s Center for Women in Medicine published a report titled, “Women in Biomedical Engineering” that indicates that women make up about 17 percent of biomedical graduates, while the average age of those graduating from medical school is 38. 

Additionally, women are underrepresented in science and technology, as well as in leadership positions. 

A recent survey of more 10,000 physicians and health care workers found that the majority believe that women have less access to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), or STEM fields than men.

Sridhar Subramaniam and Katherine B. Schuster wrote that a lack to recruit female applicants for certain positions has led to the shortage of qualified female applicants. 

Their study found that for the 2016-2020 period, the median age of women applying for medical school positions was 39 years, and the median number of medical school applications for female applicants was 7.3, compared to 9.4 for men.

Because of this, she added, the stereotype of the female medical doctor is more pronounced than other types of medical graduates. 

However, Dr Schuster said that women can still be successful in medicine. 

 “Women have been successful in this field for many years, so it’s just about understanding that there are barriers and it’s a lot easier to overcome barriers that we don’t understand than to overcome those that we do,” she said.

Google says it is ‘looking into’ its artificial intelligence workforce

Google has been accused of not paying employees enough for their work, after claiming it was only paying engineers £4.65 an hour.

The search giant has said it is “looking into” the issue, but a source familiar with the matter told the ABC it has not yet decided whether to pay workers the amount they were owed.

The Australian Government’s National Institute for the Arts said it had contacted Google over its pay arrangements.

“Our inquiry into Google’s pay arrangements is ongoing and we have asked Google to provide more information on the matter,” a spokeswoman for the Australian Government said.

“We are continuing to support the Government’s call for Google to address the issue of its pay system and ensure that all employees receive the pay they are owed.”

The spokeswoman said Google has not been making a payment for employees to date.

“The Department of Employment has not received any payments from Google in excess of the pay entitlements we are providing, as we are unable to collect on them,” she said.

Google said it has been paying employees the amounts it is due for years.

“Google’s compensation system is designed to make sure our engineers get the pay and conditions they deserve, without a company taking advantage of employees,” a spokesperson said.

They are currently receiving $3.60 per hour, up from $3 an hour last year.

Google’s payment arrangements were first reported by the BBC’s The World Tonight program on Tuesday night.

Google previously said its pay structure was “fair, equitable and transparent”.

“We pay our engineers a salary that reflects their skills and performance and the conditions they work under,” a spokesman said.

It said in the past, employees had been paid $12 an hour to help “get Google where it needs to be”.

“That has been changing,” the spokesman said, adding Google had a pay structure for employees that had “more flexible” terms and conditions.

“It is a fair, equitable, transparent and competitive pay system for Google’s engineers.”

Google has been criticised by industry experts for failing to pay employees the minimum wage and the minimum benefits that they were entitled to under the Fair Work Act.
